Mystery Animal Captured on Camera at Jewel Cave National Monument Sparks Investigation

Rapid City, SD, October 9, 2026 —

Researchers at Jewel Cave National Monument are actively investigating the identity of an animal recently captured on a wildlife camera. The unclear footage has prompted speculation, with many members of the public suggesting the animal is a porcupine.

Park officials are proceeding with caution, focusing on gathering additional evidence to definitively confirm the species. This effort is a component of a larger, ongoing wildlife monitoring project within the monument. The nature of the photographic evidence has made immediate identification challenging, necessitating further investigation.

To aid in this process, park staff are seeking more concrete clues, such as animal footprints, which can provide distinct characteristics for species identification. The goal is to leverage multiple lines of evidence to provide an accurate assessment of the animal’s presence and its species.

The exact timeline for the footage capture or the duration of the investigation was not provided. Similarly, the specific type of wildlife camera used and its location within the monument were not detailed. The names of the researchers involved in the investigation were also not publicly disclosed.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the National Park Service to understand and monitor the diverse wildlife populations within protected areas like Jewel Cave National Monument. Such monitoring projects are crucial for conservation efforts and for managing park ecosystems effectively. The confirmation of the animal’s species will contribute valuable data to this ongoing scientific endeavor.
